Other Wolves

There are only two kinds of wolves, the red wolf and the gray wolf.

Gray wolves once were common throughout all of the United States.

Now their range includes Cananda, Alaska, Idaho, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Wisconsin and Wyoming with 52 Mexican Gray Wolves inhabiting New Mexico and Arizona.

There are an estimated 7000 wolves in Alaska. Numbers in the lower 48 states vary from 3000 to 5000 animals.

Gray Wolves are listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act in all of the lower 48 states except for Minnesota where they are listed as threatened. Wolves are not considered endagered in Alaska.

Currently there are estimated to be 200,000 wolves in this world, compared to 2 million in earlier times.
