“ . . . my mother is a member of the NM Mountain Club, and Elke recently made a presentation at one of their meetings.  She really enjoyed it and had wonderful things to say about Elke and her presentation!  I think some of their members would definitely be interested in seeing the library presentation...“

Events

July 30, 2010, Albuquerque:

Educator and filmmaker Elke Duerr will give a presentation about Mexican Gray Wolves  at The Kosmos on 1715 Fifth Street NW, Friday, July 30th 8:00pm, doors open at 7pm. The program focuses on myths, fiction and facts about the Mexican Gray Wolf, the role of the Lobo in the ecosystem and will include footage and stills from Duerr’s documenatry film “Stories of wolves-The Lobo returns”.

“Stories of Wolves-The lobo returns” is an examination of the Mexican Gray Wolf recovery program in New Mexico. It’s a story with man subplots because of the dynamic relationship of the wolf to the various communities who now share its habitat: the ranchers, the conservationists, the Native American cultures, and the other animals that depend upon its presence to maintain a healthy ecological system.

Just as much as it’s a film about wolves, it’s also about eh people of New Mexico and their stand in making this program a success or a failure. And ultimately it is a bout the vanishing wildness inside and outside of us. There are currently only about 40 lobos left in the wild.

The program is designed as a fundraiser for the wolf project and includes a musical jazz performance by friends of wolves, food and a silent art auction. Doors open at 7pm, tickets at $15 are available for presale at info@wildwolffilm.com or at the door. Beverages and desserts are available by donation.

For full information see the press release and program.

Filmmaker and Mexican Graywolf activist Elke Duerr will be hosting information sessions about her work with the Mexican Graywolves and her adventures in filmmaking this summer. Please feel free to come join one of her sessions and learn more about the wolves and their place in the ecosystem.

Elke was recently on Albuquerque's Channel 27 "City Views" program sharing her insight on the Mexican Graywolf.

These talks are designed to provide the facts about the remaining wolves in our state and provide hands-on experiences from our magic “Wolf Trunk”. The audience will be able to see live size wolf tracks, wolf fur, and get acquainted with the scientific process of radio collaring a wolf to track its movements and whereabouts the way it is being practiced by the Fish and Wildlife Service, the institution that is in charge of the wolf reintroduction program in New Mexico and Arizona.

During the presentation we will howl with the wolves on tape and listen to stories of wolf encounters from my fieldwork as a filmmaker and my interviews with people who have experienced wolves personally. Last but not least we watch the trailer of the film and look at stills from the film work to give us an idea of what the wolves look like, where the wolves live and what type of environment they occupy. We discuss our own relationship to the wolf and why we might want it to remain a part of our wilderness and cultural heritage and what we can do to help it thrive in its former habitat.

Please call for information and bookings.
